Glacier Wonderland – Adventure day tour

Welcome to the glacier wonderland. This is an unmissable opportunity to see the majestic world inside the heart of Langjokull glacier with your own eyes, 2500 years of ice sculpted by the hand of nature. Here, a monster truck will be waiting transport us up to the entrance of the tunnel, situated at 1200m above sea level. We will also visit many beautiful sites on the way, for example lava fields and hot springs.

This journey takes us across one of the planet’s true great wildernesses, and the closest we can get to experiencing the Ice Age. Here you will understand the meaning behind the name ICE-land, with opportunities to enjoy some magnificent landscapes and important historic sites.

Note: The route of this tour varies from one season to another due to road conditions in the highlands. Every season has it´s own points of interest and your guide will inform you of the route we will take on the day of your tour.

Tour Description

Leaving Reykjavik, we head towards Hvalfjordur – the whale fjord is 30km long and 5km wide and takes it’s name from the many whale sitings in it’s waters. Formed by glacial erosion during the Ice Age, Hvalfjordur would prove a hindrance to our route were it not for the convenient tunnel constructed in 1998.

Driving to the glacier

On the way to the glacier we will stop at various beautiful locations. For example Sturlureyki farm, which is located on a geothermal area; Reykholt village, a historical site; and Hraunfossar waterfalls.

Hraunfossar is a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 metres out of the Hallmundarhraun, a lavafield which flowed from an eruption close to the year 930. The waterfalls pours into the Hvítá river from ledges of less porous rock in the lava. The name hraun comes from the Icelandic word for lava.

Hallmundarhraun lava field was formed by a giant eruption close to the Langjokull glacier around the year 930. It is highly likely that the first Vikings settlers in the area, saw the molten lava flow during the formation of these giant lava caves. The Hallmundarhraun lava field covers over 242 sq. kilometers and has a volume of around 9 cubic kilometers, at over 52 km long it is one of the biggest lava fields on earth (in historical times). It consists of several large tubes, amongst them are some of Iceland’s longest lava tubes.

After a lunch in Husafell we visit one of the shattered collapsed lava pits of Hallmundarhraun. The lava here has both more numerous and more sizable shatter rings than any other lava field on Earth.

Ice Tunnel & Monster Truck

From Hallmundarhraun we travel to Langjokull glacier – one of this planet’s largest glaciers. By the fringes of the glacier you board a huge monster truck which will take you up to the ice cave almost the glacier’s peak – here you will enter another world inside the astounding depths of the glacier.

The ice tunnel gives you a rare opportunity to follow the formation of a glacier. Normal snow has formed into layers over time, these crusts of snow slowly amalgamate into glacial ice; imagine capturing a freeze frame of Mother Nature’s work. This sub-glacial level world of snow and ice, is buried deep inside the mighty 953 km2 glacier.

We will spend about 50 minutes exploring the tunnels, the crevasses, moulins (glacier mills), waterways, ice layers and spaces between them. This will give you first hand experience of the different types of snow and ice, and the process of the glacier evolving.
