Flatey Island & Puffins

In Iceland the puffin, lundi, has a nickname, prófastur, `Dean´ – in the meaning of a priest, because of the way the puffin struts around. The bird has more nicknames that just proofs that it is dear to the people of Iceland, probably both because of its stunning and colourful looks and that it tastes good.During the summer months, Flatey, uninhibited in winter, comes to life along with the puffins that flock to Flatey in April and leave again in September. So many have made Flatey their home and breeding place that the highest part of the island is called Lundahryggur (Puffinsridge). On this puffin tour we sail out on Breiðafjörður bay – where the islands are so many that they cannot be counted – to one of the biggest islands, Flatey.

Tour Description – Fjord and Islands

On our way to the Snæfellsnes peninsula we drive by the verydeep fjord Hvalfjörður (meaning “Fjord of whales”) and have a view over the ruins of the base of the British and American navies. We continue over a mountain pass down to Borgarnes where we stop for lunch at the Landnámssetur, the Settlement Centre. Our tour continues northwards with a detour to the coast line to areas rich of birdlife, and we hear the touching story of the French fishing vessel Pourquois pas?Later on we stop at impressive wall of basalt columns and at Rauðamelsölkelda, the largest natural mineral spring in the world and we will most certainly quench our thirst there.Stykkishólmur town awaits us with the ferry to Flatey Island.

We leave the minibus behind as no cars are allowed on the island. During the 80 min. sailing to Flatey, the biggest island on Breiðafjörður Bay, we enjoy being out on sea, try counting islands on Breiðafjörður and look out for wildlife in the air and the waters. We will spend the next three hours there, hiking and searching for the puffins. There’s also a very nice coffee house and interesting restored buildings to see.During hatching time, part of the island is closed to visitors to protect the puffin couples, both new and old, busy taking a good care of their offspring – very important as the puffin hatches just one egg. But we will still be able to the birds on foot and flying in from the sea on their tiny wings that they flap 300-400 times per minute!
We leave Flatey at 20:00 with the boat to Stykkishólmur. If weather conditions are good, we may have time to enjoy the views by the lighthouse at Stykkishólmur. Then we start our evening tour back to Iceland’s capital, enjoying the different colours and landscapes in the evening light, making some photo stops. We will be in Reykjavik around midnight.
